October 25, 2008 | Field Hockey
ATHENS, Ohio ? The Ball State field hockey team lost to Ohio 5-1 Saturday at Pruitt Field.
Senior Jodi Mann and sophomore Kaitlin Mitchell each led with two shots on goal; however it was senior Casey Hunsicker who connected on the single goal for the Cardinals late in the first half. Hunsicker's fourth season goal tied the game at halftime and also prevented the Bobcats from earning their second shutout against Ball State this season.
The Bobcat's leading scorer senior Rachelle Coetzee earned her 10th goal of the season and added two assists on senior night. Fellow senior Nikki Gnozzio along with Louzeth Schutte, Marcy Dull, and Jenna Green added one goal apiece for a season-high five goals in the match.
Ohio goalkeeper Jessie Martin stopped four of the five shots she faced during the game; however Ball State's goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett passed the 100 mark as she earned her 103rd season save in the net. She is just 25 saves shy from reaching the top five in career saves. Freshman Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) also saw six minutes of action for the Cardinals in her first collegiate game.
The Cardinals matched the number of penalty corner opportunities but were unable to balance out the shots, trailing 18-7.
Ball State is now 1-6 in the Mid-American Conference and will face Kent State 1 p.m. Sunday. The Golden Flashes are coming off their seventh straight conference win after defeating Miami 3-1 at home.
