Women's Volleyball Suffers Loss to Ohio

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-19) setback to Ohio Saturday night at Worthen Arena.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 8-14 (4-4 Mid-American Conference) on the year. The Bobcats, who improve to 13-6 (6-2 MAC) with the win.
Ohio's Ellen Herman was the offensive star of the night, racking up 19 kills while helping Ohio to a .356 (48-11-104) to .146 (32-18-96) hitting edge over BSU.
Three Cardinals finished the night with a team-high seven kills, including Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.), Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) and Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.).
BSU's Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) collected her 11th double-double of the season by handing out 29 assists to go along with a match-best 15 digs. Alyssa Rio (Wayne, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) was the only other player to collect double-figure digs in the contest with 12.
After playing to a 2-2 tie in the opening set, the Cardinals quickly found themselves trailing 8-3 as the Ohio offense came to life with four different players collecting a kill. The Bobcats took their first 10-point lead at the 19-9 mark before winning the frame 25-13. In the set, Ohio hit a match-best .500 (16-1-30), with Herman blasting nine of her 19 kills.
An Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) kill gave BSU its first lead on the night at 1-0 in the second set, but the Bobcats rallied off five of the next six points to pull ahead 5-2. Ohio managed to build another 10-point lead at 17-7 and maintained an 11-point margin at 23-12.
A block by McGinnis and Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) and three kills from Breivogel helped BSU pull within five at 23-18, while a Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) service ace after an Ohio timeout drew the Cardinals within four at 23-19. Unfortunately for BSU, OU's Amanda Anderson came to life, smashing back-to-back kills for end the frame at 25-19.
Ball State came out strong in the third set, building a 3-0 advantage, before the Bobcats answered with a 7-3 run to pull ahead 7-6. Despite some strong play from the Cardinals, Ohio would not trail the rest of the set, going on to win the frame 25-19 on a kill from Jane Systma.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will have a quick turnaround this week, as IPFW visits Worthen Arena Tuesday for a non-conference showdown. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
