Volleyball Scores Tuesday Sweep Of IPFW
October 22, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Behind a match-high 11 kills from junior Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.), the Ball State women's volleyball team tallied a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 26-24) victory over in-state rival IPFW Tuesday evening at Worthen Arena.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 9-14 on the year, while the Mastodons fall to 11-11.
In addition to Kakatolis' 11 markers, junior Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) added 10 kills to help the Cardinals snap a three-match losing skid and enter Friday's match at Bowling Green with some momentum.
Defensively, BSU's sophomore Hannah Sullivan (New Albany, Ind./New Albany H.S.) and freshman Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) were the stars of the night, pacing the match with 12 digs and seven total blocks, respectively. Sullivan's 12 digs were a BSU-best for the transfer from Houston, while Boyd's seven total blocks tied a career-high.
Boyd also added nine kills in the contest, as did junior Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.), who ranked second in the match with six total blocks.
Freshman Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) set the BSU offense to a .271 (49-20-107) rate of success, while logging 38 assists and nine digs to fall just shy of her 12 career double-double.
The IPFW, which hit .117 (32-20-103) for the night, was paced by Rebekah Roehm's eight kills, while Mayara Schlindwein added seven markers. Ashley Dillon collected a team-best eight digs, after the Mastodons were limited to a season-low three digs in the opening set.
After playing to a 7-6 advantage in frame one, a kill and some strong serving from Sullivan helped the Cardinals build a seven-point advantage at the 13-6 mark. The Mastodons managed to rally within three points at 17-14 and again at 21-18, only to see a Breivogel kill and three-straight BSU blocks end the frame at 25-18.
With Ball State holding a 10-8 edge early in the second frame, a kill from Taryn Parker and back-to-back service aces from Jessica Dominiak tied the set at 10, while three BSU attacking errors gave the guests from Ft. Wayne a 13-10 advantage. The lead was short-lived, however, as kills from Sullivan and Boyd, plus a Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) tied the set at 13.
Boyd followed with her second marker of the rally, as BSU pulled ahead 14-13. IPFW answered back, scoring the next two points and eventually playing to an 18-16 lead. The Cardinals tied the set two points later, before the teams battled to a 22-22 deadlock. Breivogel broke the tie with a kill, while Kakatolis followed with two bolts of her own to give BSU the 25-22 second-set victory.
Ball State looked poised to pull away with the third frame early, scoring the first five points and playing to a nine-point lead at 15-6. However, the Mastodons would not go down without a fight, rattling off the next eight points, to draw within one at 15-14. Schlindwein started the rally with a kill, while Dillon capped the run with one of her two kills in the run.
From there, IPFW took a two-point edge at the 19-17 mark after back-to-back kills from Roehm and a BSU attack error. Ball State tied the set moments later at 21-21 and the teams played to a 23-23 tie. Jessica Miller and Parker tried to force a fourth set, by giving IPFW set point at 24-23 with a block assists.
Ball State would not be denied the victory, however, as Breivogel tied the score with a kill and combined with Boyd for a block assist, giving BSU its first match point. The Cardinals only needed one more swing, as Kakatolis slammed the match-winner to the Worthen Arena hardwood floor.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Friday, with it travels to Bowling Green, Ohio, for a 7 p.m. Mid-American Conference showdown with the Falcons.
