Newell Scores 22, Men's Hoops Drops MAC Opener At Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Ball State men's basketball team led for much of Sunday's Mid-American Conference opener, but defending MAC regular season champion Toledo used a second half spurt, triggered by key three-point shooting, to escape Savage Hall with a 58-54 win.
Ball State's Anthony Newell and Peyton Stovall each scored in double figures for the second straight game. Newell poured in 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Stovall scored 18.
Ball State led by as many as 10 points in the first half. After their advantage was cut to one point at halftime, the Cardinals opened up a six-point margin in the second half before Toledo made its run.
"I thought the guys were focused and executed offensively to start the game," Ball State head coach Billy Taylor said. "Unfortunately, we didn't follow that play. We became sloppy with our execution in the final 10 minutes and really played into Toledo's hands."
The Cardinals now return to Muncie for three straight home games against MAC West foes. Ball State opens that homestand Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest against Central Michigan at Worthen Arena.
