
Cardinals Compete In BSU Open -- No Team Scoring

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State Cardinals opened up the 2008 indoor track season by hosting the BSU Open at the field sports building.
Senior Cara Collins climbed to second on the all-time BSU track and field top ten records list in the weight throw with a distance of 60-1 ?. Janee Langhorne still holds the best mark of 60-7 ? set in 2002. Collins also set a career best mark in the shot put with a distance of 43-5 ?.
Junior Lauren McNichols started where she left off last season in the pole vault competition. McNichols holds the indoor BSU school record in the event with a height of 11-7 ?. She was able to clear 11-6 at the BSU Open.
On the track, Amber Williams competed as an unattached athlete since she will redshirt for the 2008 season. Williams took first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.64. Sophomore Katie Johnson took second place finishing in 7.97, while freshman Ra'Jae Marable finished in third clocking in at 8.11.
Williams also took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.60. Johnson was only a second behind her best time of 2007 finishing in 26.64, and freshman Lindsey Peterson took third place with a time of 27.23.
Ali Bishel earned a first place finish, and set a career best time in the 800-meter run clocking in at 2:21.47. Freshman Megan Bevans followed in second place finishing in 2:29.15.
Laura Bandy just missed winning her first collegiate track race in the mile. Bandy finished in 5:21.53 good enough for second place behind Brigitte Sherman (5:21.29) of the University of Dayton.
The Cardinals will return to action Friday, Jan. 18 when they travel to compete in the Bowling Green Quadrangular.
