Women's Tennis Completes Day One of Ball State Fall Invite

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University women's tennis team opened the 2007 fall season at the Ball State Fall Invitational Friday morning at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
Newcomer Georgina Thomson (Sydney, Australia/St. Magaret's Anlican Girl's School) won her first collegiate match over Sammi Schoen of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in Flight B singles. Thomson advanced to the semifinals after pulling off a 6-0, 6-0 victory over IPFW's Ashley Coulson.
Senior Jennifer Pollack (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) managed to win a nail biter over Jenny Edner of Northern Illinois, 7-6 (7-0), 6-4, advancing her to the semifinals of Flight C singles. Freshman Hayley Hall (Muncie, Ind./Delta) was victorious over Dayton's Nikki Dzubay (6-1, 6-0) and Northern Illinois' Tricia Brinck (6-0, 6-2) also advancing her to the Flight C semifinal round.
Katherine Rist (Leawood, Kansas/Blue Valley North) defeated Valerie Vinluan of Butler 6-1, 6-2 and Dayton's Chelsea Gray, 6-3, 6-3 in the Flight D bracket.
Sophomore Sophie Quist (Australia, Ascham School) advanced to the consolation semifinals of the Flight A singles after defeating Sachi Janek of IPFW (6-0, ret.). In other BSU consolation action junior Rachel Surowiec (LaPorte, Ind./IPFW) took down Alexa Rang of IPFW by a score of 6-1, 6-0, advancing her to the Flight D singles semifinals.
Retter and Rist won in Flight C doubles by a score of 8-4 over Northern Illinois twosome Brink and Friedlun. The BSU duo of Hall and Surowieck won their first doubles match 8-6 over IPFW's Carpenter and Rang in the Flight D bracket.
The Cardinals will continue action at the Ball State Fall Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center beginning at 9 a.m.
