MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State field hockey team fell one goal short Sunday in a 3-2 loss to Mid-American Conference opponent Kent State.
Senior midfielder Lauren Cruz and senior forward Katie Kloeckener each scored their first goals of the season for Ball State in the loss.
After a first half that saw only one scoring play -- a goal by Kent State's Allison Kittelberger in the 13th minute -- both offenses picked up the pace in the second half.
Kent State's Libby Lame increased the Golden Flashes' lead to 2-0 on a goal less than one minute into the second half.
But Cruz quickly responded for Ball State, scoring in the 36th minute to draw the Cardinals within one goal. Kloeckener later evened the score at 2-2 when she scored off an assist from Brooke MacGillivary at the 42:43 mark.
Less than two minutes after Kloeckener's goal, however, Kent State's Megan Scraper scored what proved to be the game-winner for the Golden Flashes on a second chance opportunity in front of the cage.
Following a flurry of four foals within ten minutes to start the second half, both defenses again took charge and neither team managed a goal the rest of the way.
Ball State goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett made ten saves on the day, and Kent State keeper Kara Copeland saved five shots.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday on the road at Central Michigan. Ball State will then return home to host Missouri State on Oct. 6.
