MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State field hockey team took the nation's No. 11 team to the wire Saturday, but Ohio managed to escape BSU Turf Field with a 4-3 win in overtime.
Four different Ohio players scored in the game, while three separate Cardinals logged goals, including seniors Amanda Pavone and Jamie Kahn, who each celebrated their Senior Day with a score.
Kahn's goal came in the final six minutes of regulation and tied the game 3-3. She took a pass from fellow senior Lauren Cruz and found the back of the cage for her first goal of the year.
Neither team managed a goal through the final five minutes of regulation or the first eight minutes of overtime. But Ohio's Katelyn Shelley changed that when she lined up a shot in the ninth minute of overtime and scored the game-winner.
Saturday's game marked the second straight contest decided in overtime between the two schools. The Cardinals and Bobcats battled to a 1-1 tie through regulation in last year's MAC Tournament finals before Ohio scored in overtime for the win.
In Saturday's contest, Ball State (2-7, 0-2 MAC) fought its way back from an early two-goal deficit. Ohio's Torrie Albini put the Bobcats on the board with a goal at the 8:53 mark, and Marcy Dull scored in the 21st minute to give Ohio (6-3, 1-0 MAC) a 2-0 lead.
Brooke MacGillivary put Ball State on the board just more than a minute later when she fired a shot through traffic that found the right side of the cage. MacGillivary's goal left the Cardinals trailing by one at halftime, but Pavone brought the Cardinals even at the 43:30 mark. Ball State earned a penalty stroke, and Pavone placed it into the top left portion of the cage to tie the score 2-2.
The game stayed tied until the 62nd minute, when Ohio's Estienne Coetzee scored off an assist from Lauren Cassady to put the Bobcats on top 3-2. Ohio held the advantage for only three minutes before Kahn's goal knotted things up and sent the game to overtime.
For the game, Ball State managed 12 shots on goal to Ohio's 10. MacGillivary's goal was her fifth of the season, giving her the solo team lead in that category.
Ball State goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett finished the game with four saves, while Ohio keeper Jessie Martin saved nine shots.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they close out their weekend with another home contest against Kent State. Sunday's game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
