Brittany Kelly Sets School Record; Golf Finishes Second

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Freshman Brittany Kelly fired a school-record round of 69 Monday afternoon at the Mid-American Conference Preview Tournament played at Brickyard Crossing.
Entering Tuesday's final round with a four-stroke lead, the challenging and windy conditions saw the Cardinals post a team score of 307, while Eastern Michigan's 301 erased the deficit to win the event by one stroke over Ball State.
"It was a very good finish in tough conditions," said BSU head coach Katherine Mowat. "Pins were in tough positions and the wind made the course very challenging. All-in-all, it was a good tournament and I am pleased with our team's performance."
Sophomore Kirsty O'Connor posted a two-under par round of 70 on Tuesday to tie for second overall. O'Connor's 36-hole score of 143 sets a new BSU school record for 36 holes, bettering the 146 set by Kallie Harrison in 2006.
Kelly, Amy Roberts and Rachel Pruett all shot a 79, Paige Esford shot an 80 while individuals Sarah Windlan posted an 81 and Melissa Miller carded an 82.
Kelly's three-under round of 69 Monday surpassed the previous BSU-record of 71 posted by Harrison in 2006.
In addition, the Cardinals' first-round team score of 294 is also a school record -- bettering the 2005 team's then-record round of 297, while the 36-hole team score of 601 is 12 strokes better than the previous school standard of 613 set by the 2003 team.
"Obviously Monday was very exciting," said BSU head coach Katherine Mowat. "Brittany's round of golf was exciting to watch and as a whole, our team played really well.
"I belive Monday's performance isn't a one-time thing. I think we are good enough to shoot this well again. To have our team perform this way is very, very encouraging."
