May 06, 2007 | Men's Golf
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior C.D. Hockersmith fired a final-round 72, while sophomore Brian Maurer posted a 74 to lead the Ball State men's golf team in the final round of the 2007 Mid-American Conference Championship at the Medallion Club Saturday.
Despite climbing to as high as second overall as a team following Thursday's first 36 holes of action, the Cardinals ended their 2007 spring season with a fourth-place finish at the league event.
BSU posted rounds of 284, 289, 289 and 298 for a 1160 total.
Eastern Michigan, who registered a 14-under team score Friday, managed a final-round 289 to win its first MAC Championship in men's golf with a team score of 1138.
The Eagles entered the final round trailing 54-hole leader Akron, but matched the Zips on the leaderboard by the 15th hole to eventually win by three strokes.
Senior Austin Steele finished 14th overall as Ball State's top performer at the league championship. Steele, playing in his final collegiate tournament along with fellow seniors Hockersmith, Wayne Denger and Andy Skillman, carded a final-round 75.
Steele opened the first 36 holes with consecutive two-under par rounds of 70 to tie for second overall, before back-to-back 75s allowed him to finish two-over for the tournament in 14th place.
Hockersmith finished his stellar Ball State career with his fourth top 15 finish at the MAC Championship. He recorded rounds of 75, 75, 71 and 72 to tie with Maurer for 15th overall.
Skillman and Denger tied for 27th overall in their final collegiate event with final rounds of 77 and 81, respectively.
Denger was named to the All-MAC Second Team at Saturday's Championship awards ceremony at Medallion.
