Snow Forces Marshall Invitational To 36 Holes; BSU Second
April 07, 2007 | Men's Golf
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- After snow forced play in the second round of the Marshall Invitational to be suspended Friday afternoon, the teams were able to finish in frigid, snowy conditions Saturday morning before playing conditions forced the event to be called after 36 holes.
With four holes to finish Saturday to reach the 36-hole total, the Cardinals added 13 strokes overall to their first-round leading score of 282 to shoot a second and final-round 295.
Entering the second round with a three-stroke lead, Ball State tied Marquette for second overall with a 36-hole team total of 577.
Penn State, which trailed Ball State by three strokes after round one, finished round two with a 280 to win the shortened tournament by 12 strokes (565).
"The playing conditions were tough Friday afternoon and Saturday morning," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "After having the first-round lead, we are all disappointed with how we finished. I think Friday's round showed how competitive this team can be, which we needed. We also finished ahead of the six other Mid-American Conference schools at this event, which is always our goal."
Behind two-under par rounds of 69 from Wayne Denger and Andy Skillman, plus a one-under round of 70 from Brian Maurer, Ball State found itself in first place after the first round of the 2007 Marshall Invitational.
The Cardinals played 13 holes in Friday afternoon's second round in frigid conditions, before heavy snowfall blanketed the course and forced round two to be suspended.
Upon conclusion of play Saturday, Denger finished tied for fourth overall (69-72), while Skillman (69-77) and Maurer (70-76) each finished tied for 14th.
C.D. Hockersmith climbed to 34th overall (76-72), while Ben Lakoff finished tied for 46th (74-75). Ross Cosat topped the list of all individual competitors in the tournament to also tie for 34th overall (75-73).
Ball State returns to action April 21 at the Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State.
