Soccer Continues Spring With 4-1 Victory Over Wright State

MUNCIE, Ind. ? The Ball State soccer team turned in a dominating performance in its third game of the spring season as the Cardinals downed regional foe Wright State, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the BSU Soccer Field. The Cardinals scored three first half goals and out-shot the Raiders, 19-3 to improve to 2-1 in the spring season.

The two teams battled back-and-forth for the first 20-plus minutes of the game until the Cardinals' pressure led to a goal in the 27^th minute. Midfielder Annie Aiello sent a cross into the box that midfielder Amy Holst slammed into the back of the goal on a diving header to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Forward Sarah Leibel also tallied an assist on the goal as she combined with Aiello prior to the cross.

Ball State used the momentum from the first goal to cash in for the second goal on a corner kick in the 29^th minute. Aiello again was the catalyst for the goal as she lofted the corner kick to the far post where an on-charging Angie Heyer was able to volley it past the diving Wright State goalkeeper for the two-goal lead.

The Cardinals closed out the first half with a goal in the waning seconds as midfielder Megan Ridley turned in a stellar individual effort. Ridley received the ball 30-yards out and split a pair of Wright State defenders to move in alone on the WSU goalkeeper. She blasted a shot just inside the 18-yard box for the 3-0 BSU halftime lead.

Ball State closed out its scoring in the 59^th minute as Leibel picked up her second assist on the afternoon. She made a run down the left side of the field and drove a cross through the box. Forward Sarah Schumaker was able to pounce on the end of the cross for an easy tap in from the back post for the 4-0 lead.

Wright State picked up a goal in the 69^th minute as Megan Mattioda drilled a free kick from 20-yards out into the back of the net to end the shutout attempt for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they conclude their spring schedule with an Alumni Game. The contest is set for a 1 p.m. start at the BSU Soccer Field.
