March 20, 2007 | Men's Golf
PINEHURST, N.C. -- Wayne Denger fired a final-round 72 to lead the Ball State men's golf team in the spring season opener played at historic Pinehurst Golf Club.
The Cardinals posted team scores of 321-309-301=931 to place 17th out of the 18 teams competing at the Pinehurst Invitational. Indiana rallied to win the event with a final-round 290 and overall team score of 880. Michigan was second at 885.
"We're obviously disappointed with our performance at Pinehurst," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "We opened with some really high scores, and even though many scores improved in the next two rounds for the most part, we were never able to gain any ground."
Denger tied for 47th overall with a 54-hole score of 230. He opened with consecutive rounds of 79, before his even-par round of 72 Tuesday.
C.D. Hockersmith (83-76-76=235) tied for 70th, Matt Schumaker (85-76-75=236) tied for 73rd and Andy Skillman (78-81-78=237) tied for 76th.
Kyle Cox rounded out the BSU five to tie for 87th (81-78-85=244). Austin Steele, competing as an individual, tied for 73rd (79-76-81=236).
Ball State returns to action March 26 at the UALR Invitational in Little Rock, Arkansas.
