
No. 5 UCLA Tops No. 15 Men?s Volleyball In Friday Rematch

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - - The No. 15 Ball State men's volleyball team suffered its second-straight loss at the hands of No. 5 UCLA Friday evening, falling 0-3 (23-30, 22-30, 21-30) to the Bruins at Pauley Pavilion.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 10-9 on the year, while the Bruins improve to 14-9 with the victory.
After being limited to a season-low -.021 (25-27-95) attack percentage in the series opener with the Bruins Wednesday night, the Cardinals offense rebounded slightly, hitting .202 (37-19-89) in Friday's loss.
Matt McCarthy (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South H.S.) paced the Ball State offense in the contest, collecting seven kills while hitting a team-best .538 (7-0-13).
Four Cardinals - - Justin Orr (Gladstone, Mo./Winnetonka H.S.), Mark Rumschik (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park H.S.), Eric Schulte (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood H.S.) and Mark Termion (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North H.S.) - - scored six kills, while Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) added five and Jeff Schmitz (Fenton, Mo./St. John Vianney) posted one.
Defensively, Ian Peckler (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills H.S.) scored a match-high nine digs, while Orr added a team-high three blocks. Schmitz dished out a team-high 26 assists.
For the match, UCLA held a .371 (52-16-97) to .202 hitting advantage, while out-blocking the Cardinals 7-to-5, out-acing the Cardinals 7-to-2 and holding a slim 25-to-24 edge in digs.
For the second time versus the Cardinals, Steve Klosterman paced the UCLA offense, scoring a match-best 15 kills, while Brett Perrine and Jamie Diefenbach scored 10 kills each. Tony Ker would add eight digs for the Bruins.
The Ball State men's volleyball team returns to action March 30, when it opens play in the 2007 Don Shondell/Active Ankle Challenge vs. George Mason at 7:30 p.m.
