DeMuth & Stovall Candidates For National Award
December 05, 2007 | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Senior Julie DeMuth (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville H.S.) and senior Peyton Stovall (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jeff H.S.) have each been named a candidate for the 2007-08 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award as one of the nation's top 30 senior male and female college basketball players.
The award, presented annually to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year in eight sports, focuses on the “Four C's” of classroom, character, community and competition. Lowe's, an official corporate sponsor of the NCAA, will award the winners with trophies during the NCAA Final Four.
DeMuth and Stovall are the only student-athletes from the Mid-American Conference named as candidates, while Ball State joins Tennessee, Texas A&M and the United States Military Academy as the only schools with both a male and female candidate. The two are also the first in either sport in Ball State history to be among the top 30 candidates.
“I am very happy that both Julie and Peyton have earned this national recognition,” says Ball State women's basketball head coach Tracy Roller. “Julie has been a constant in our program for four years with her exceptional character, scholarship and basketball talent.”
DeMuth, who last season became the 18th BSU women's basketball player to reach 1,000 career points, currently leads the 2007-08 Cardinals with her 14.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest. Entering Tuesday's home contest vs. Illinois State, DeMuth has played in 95 career games.
Stovall, who has played in 96 career games entering Wednesday's game at Purdue, scored a season-high 22 points vs. Evansville Nov. 24 and has 51 career double-figure scoring games to his credit. The fifth-year senior became just the 24th player in the 87-year history of BSU men's basketball to score over 1,000 points earlier this season. He is also nominated for the national Coach John Wooden Citizenship Cup, presented annually to only one collegiate student-athlete across all sports and all divisions.
“Congratulations are in order for both Peyton and Julie,” says first-year BSU men's basketball coach Billy Taylor. “To be listed among the top 30 seniors in the nation for this award is a true credit to their character and integrity. I can't say enough about what Peyton has meant to us this season, and to the University and community throughout his career. He truly exemplifies the total student-athlete.”
From the list of 30 nominees for each gender, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the award in January. Those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote during the NCAA Tournament in March. Fan balloting will be combined with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipients.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards that a senior season can bring.
