Three Cardinals Earn All-MAC Field Hockey Honors

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Three Ball State field hockey players took home All-Mid-American Conference honors Thursday night at the league tournament banquet.
Senior midfielder Lauren Cruz and sophomore forward Brooke MacGillivary represented Ball State on the All-MAC First Team, while senior defender Nicole Humphreys earned second team recognition.
Cruz's selection marks the third year in a row she has earned All-MAC honors. She was named second team All-MAC in both 2005 and 2006. In 2007, Cruz tallied 11 points while controlling the midfield for Ball State. The senior scored three goals on the season and ranked third in the conference with five assists.
MacGillivary picked up All-MAC First Team honors in her first year as a starter. The sophomore ranked second in the league with 15 goals and also dished out three assists. MacGillivary notched her first career hat trick Oct. 6 versus Missouri State. She then topped that performance two games later with a career-high four goals Oct. 14 at Kent State. MacGillivary tallied four multiple-goal games in 2007 and earned the league's Offensive Player of the Week award three times.
Humphreys, a four-year starter for Ball State, is a first-time recipient of All-MAC honors. The senior has been a consistent defensive performer for the Cardinals, having started 73 of a possible 74 games in her career. In 2007, Humphreys ranked second among all players in the MAC with four defensive saves.
As a team, Ball State has now had two or more players selected to the All-MAC First Team for six consecutive years. Individually, Cruz becomes the 15th player in school history to earn All-MAC recognition three times in a career.
The Cardinals wrapped up their season Thursday with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Central Michigan in the first round of the MAC Tournament. Ball State finished the season at 5-13.
