Men's Basketball Falls To Toledo At Buzzer
January 06, 2007 | Men's Basketball
Toledo's Justin Ingram nailed an off-balance jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining Saturday afternoon as the Rockets escaped Worthen Arena with a 62-60 Mid-American Conference victory.
The loss drops Ball State to 4-10 overall and 0-1 in the MAC, while Toledo snapped its three-game losing skid to improve to 5-8 overall and 1-0 in the league.
"We did some good things today, but it hurts because we were right there," says first-year BSU head coach Ronny Thompson. "We let this one get away."
Ball State opened the second half with a 31-22 lead, but the visiting Rockets slowly started chipping away at the lead.
A pair of free throws from Jerrah Young with 7:06 on the clock gave Toledo its first lead since the 14-minute mark of the first half.

After the Rockets had built a 51-48 edge, D'Andre Peyton connected on a three-pointer from the left corner to tie the score at 51 with 6:00 to play. The two teams exchanged leads until Ball State went ahead 59-57 on a free throw from Peyton Stovall with 1:48 to go.
Ingram made the first of his potential game winners when he nailed a three-point field goal on the next possession to put the Rockets ahead 60-59 with under a minute to play.
Ball State's Micah Rollin was fouled under the BSU basket with :36 to play and hit one free throw to knot the score at 60. A pair of Toledo timeouts in the final 30 seconds set up Ingram's game winner.
"We executed the play," Thompson says. "Defensively, our effort was perfect, but Ingram just made the shot. I thought we did a good job on him for most of the game, but he made the big one."
Ingram finished with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Keonta Howell added 16 points, while Kashif Payne added 10 for the visiting Rockets.
Toledo opened the game with a 10-2 run just four minutes into Saturday's game, before Stovall sparked a BSU comeback.
A three from Stovall tied the game at 10 with 14:20 on the clock, while a jumper from Jalon Perryman gave BSU its biggest lead of the game at 28-18 with three minutes to go in the first half.
For the afternoon, Anthony Newell reached double figures for the 12th time this season with 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Stovall finished with 10 points, while D'andre Peyton added nine.
"Nobody wants to lose, especially their first conference game," says BSU senior Chris Ames. "We played hard today. It's only the first conference game, but this one hurts. We'll bounce back and be ready to go Tuesday."
Ball State returns to the road Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. contest at Western Michigan. The game will be televised on the Ball State Sports Network and available with "Ball State All-Access" online.
