Women's Tennis Earns Academic Honors from ITA

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The 2005-06 Ball State women's tennis team was named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's All-Academic Team for the eighth-consecutive year. The Cardinals have earned the prestigious award nine times over the last 10 years.
Five members of the squad received individual ITA Scholar Athlete accolades -- Haly Calderwood (Newington, Austrailia/Danebank H.S.), Stephanie Farrar (Phoenix, Ariz./Active Learning Academy), Jennifer Pollack (Memphis, Tenn./White Station H.S.), Emma Retter (Winchester England/Peter Symonds College) and Sarah West (Carmel, Ind./Carmel H.S.). A total of 39 players have collected individual ITA Scholar Athlete honors since 1994.
"I am extremely proud of our academic success this year and in past years," said head coach Kathy Bull. "It is a huge committment for our student-athletes part to dedicate their time and energy to being the best they can be in the classroom and on the tennis court."
Ball State is one of 92 teams out of more than 300 NCAA Division I schools in the country who sponsor tennis to achieve this award. Buffalo and Western Michigan are the only other Mid-American Conference schools to obtain the honor.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
Ball State's women's tennis team boasts a cumulative 3.41 GPA which ranks third out of BSU's 19 athletic teams.
The Cardinals are back in action after competing at Michigan State (Sept. 16-17) when they host the Ball State Invitational (Sept. 29-30).
