ANN ARBOR, Mich. - On the road for the first time this season, the Ball State field hockey team could not overcome a slow start at Michigan.
Carla Chiampi added a late goal for the Cardinals, but it was the only Ball State score in a 6-1 loss.
Chiampi deflected a shot from Jamie Kahn into the cage for her second goal of the season. Kahn picked up her third assist of the season on the play.
Lindsay Quay led the way offensively for Ball State with three shots on goal.
The Cardinals fell behind Michigan early thanks to two goals each by two of the Wolverines' starting forwards.
Lucia Belassi got the scoring started with two goals in a 37 second span to give Michigan a quick lead. Belassi notched the first goal of the match, finding the back of the cage after rebounding a save by Ball State goalkeeper Caroline Lehman. The junior added another goal 37 seconds later on an assist from Paige Laytos.
Belassi and Michigan's Kristen Tiner tied for match-high honors with four shots on goal each.
Kelly Fitzpatrick scored the next two goals for Michigan. Fitzpatrick extended the Wolverines' lead to 3-0 with a goal at the 20:48 mark. She added another goal before halftime, deflecting a Laytos pass into the cage with eight minutes to play in the first half.
Stephanie Hoyer pushed the Wolverine's advantage to 5-0 on a goal with 10 minutes to play before Chiampi put the Cardinals on the scoreboard. Ashley Lennington added a late goal for Michigan.
Ball State (1-5) returns to action Saturday in Ann Arbor, where the Cardinals will take on No. 14 Louisville.
