DEARBORN, Mich. -- Former Ball State men's golfer Patrick Wilkes-Krier, who completed his eligibility in May, fired rounds of 67, 68 and 70 to claim a two-stroke victory in the 85th Golf Association of Michigan Championship.
The championship victory is Wilkes-Krier's final amateur event. The 2006 BSU alum will now set his sights on professional golf, turning pro later this month.
The two-day championship, one of Michigan's oldest amateur competitions, was played at Dearborn Country Club.The field of 78 players was determined through exemptions and six sectional qualifiers held June 26-July 19.
The GAM Championship is open to GAM members with a GAM/USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4. Golfers played 36 holes of stroke play on Monday with the low thirty and ties advancing to the final round.
Dearborn Country Club played at 6,805 yards with a par of 71. It is a classic Donald Ross course with fast and undulating greens and soft fairways. Dearborn Country Club was built and founded by Henry Ford in 1925 and the famous Tudor-style club house was designed by famous architect Albert Kahn. Professional golfers including Arnold Palmer, Nancy Lopez and Jack Nicklaus have graced the fairways at this historic club.
