Nation's Best Five BSU Men's Golfers Named All-America Scholars
July 13, 2006 | Men's Golf
BSU seniors Brandon Boomsma and Patrick Wilkes-Krier, joined juniors Wayne Denger, C.D. Hockersmith and Andy Skillman with selection to the All-America Scholars Team.
The five BSU selections are the most in school history and the most by any Division I men's golf team in the nation. Mercer had four athletes selected, while Georgia Tech had three members selected to the team.
"It's amazing to have five guys qualify for the award and be selected," says BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "For Brandon and Patrick, this is a perfect honor to cap their collegiate career. It's also exciting to see Wayne, C.D. and Andy receive recognition as juniors. To be the only school in the nation with five All-America scholars is a credit to our program, our university and most importantly, to our student-athletes."
Only juniors and seniors are eligible to be a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar and must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average. In addition, golfers must have under a 76.0 stroke average for Division I and compete in at least 75 percent of the team's scheduled events.
Wilkes-Krier ended his senior campaign with a team-best 73.00 scoring average in the spring season. The 73 average is the third-best single season average in BSU golf history, while his career average of 74.00 is second all-time in BSU golf history.
Wilkes-Krier set a Ball State school record and First Energy Intercollegiate Tournament record with his 15-under par 201 total to win medalist honors at the famed Firestone Golf Club in April.
Boomsma's spring average was the team's second-best of the season at 74.00. He finished his career with a 74.56 career average after finishing third overall at the 2006 Mid-American Conference Championship.
