LEXINGTON, Ky. – Ball State's hitters struggled Saturday against one of the nation's top pitchers in an 11-0 loss to the College of Charleston in the Lexington Regional semifinal.
Ball State (38-21) managed five hits and advanced only one runner to third base against Nick Chigges, who entered the game third in Division I with a 1.44 ERA. Chigges struck out 13 Ball State hitters.
"Nick Chigges was as good as we've seen all season in a single-game performance," Ball State coach Greg Beals said. "Tonight we had a tough game, and we got beat by a guy and a team that are really good."
Ball State falls into the loser's bracket and will play Kentucky Sunday at 2 p.m. in an elimination game. The winner will play again at 7 p.m. against Charleston in the regional championship game. If Charleston was to lose that game, a final game would be played Monday.
Charleston (45-15) started the scoring in the second inning after back-to-back singles to open the top half. After a Ben Lasater sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Joey Friddle laced a single to right field to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the third inning, Charleston tacked on another run on an Alex Garabedian RBI single. The Cougars added two more in the fourth inning on a Friddle home run to left field and another in the fifth on a Phillip Coker RBI single.
The Cougars slammed the door with four runs in the seventh inning to extend their advantage to 10 runs. Friddle, the Cougars' ninth batter, finished with five RBI.
Five Cardinals recorded one hit each. Brad Miller provided Ball State with its best scoring opportunity when he singled to left center in the fourth inning and reached third base with one out on a fielding error. Chigges retired the next two batters to end the threat.
"I felt like we kept competing, and that's all you can do," Beals said. "Tonight we just weren't able to get anything going offensively."
