Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis hosted the 106th Indiana State Amateur Championship, in which Hockesmith tied for sixth out of 156-players. Four Cardinals finished in the top 25 of the 2006 event.
Joining Cox, Denger, Hockersmith and Skillman at the 2006 Indiana Amateur were sophomores Chris Hanson, Brian Maurer and Matt Schumaker along with freshman Ross Cosat and Travis Smith.
Smith opened the event with a two-under par round of 68 to tie for first after 18 holes before finishing tied for 17th overall. Denger tied for 13th and Skillman tied for 21st overall.
"It's exciting to see the current Ball State men's golf team very well represented at this year's Indiana State Amateur," says BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "To have nine guys qualify and advance is a good sign for the future of our program."
The Indiana Amateur Championship is the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament in the Hoosier state. It was first played at the Country Club of Indianapolis in 1900 and has been played every year since with the exception of 1917.
From 1900 to 1972 the championship was contested in a match play format. In 1973, the format was changed to 72 holes of stroke play.
Notable past champions of the event include PGA Tour players Fuzzy Zoeller (1973), Jim Gallagher, Jr. (1982, 1983), Chris Smith (1990) and world famous golf course architect Pete Dye (1958).
Qualifying for the championship was held June 2-5 at sites around the state. There were 25 players exempt for the championship -- including Hockersmith by virtue of his top-20 finish in 2005 -- plus all past champions who still meet the eligibility requirements.
The final field of 156 players was cut to the low 60 and ties following the second round. The 106th Indiana Amateur Championship final results are available online at www.indianagolf.org, the official web site of the Indiana Golf Association.
