INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Behind co-medalists Marc Bourgeois and Tommy Wiegand, the Kent State men's golf team captured its second straight and 16th overall Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship at Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis.
The Golden Flashes opened Saturday's action with a 15-stroke advantage over Ball State and Eastern Michigan.
While the team title was virtually inevitable for KSU, the battle for second place proved to be the most exciting on the afternoon.
After falling behind the Eagles by four strokes through 12 holes, junior Austin Steele sparked the comeback with three consecutive birdies on holes 15, 16 and 17.
A birdie from senior Brandon Boomsma on the 16th, while a pair of pars from Boomsma and junior C.D. Hockersmith on the 71st and 72nd holes of the tournament secured the comeback and BSU's runner-up finish.
The Cardinals fired the lowest team score in the final round with a 291.
"I'm proud of these guys," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "Even though we were disappointed with how things finished on Friday, we came out and competed on the final day and made it exciting. We keep climbing the leaderboard every year and we're getting closer to that ultimate goal."
Boomsma fired a four-round total of 288 to finish even over 72 holes and third overall in his final MAC Championship.
Hockersmith jumped 11 spots with a one-under par round of 71 to finish fifth overall. It was his second top 10 finish in three seasons at the league championship.
Austin Steele tied for 12th overall with rounds of 73-72-76-72, while Wayne Denger's 75-76-72-76 tied for 27th. Senior Patrick Wilkes-Krier, the medalist a week earlier at Firestone with a 15-under total, finished 29th overall with a 76-72-74-79.
