Score Changed In Baseball's Game Two Victory at Northern Illinois
May 15, 2006 | Baseball
The Cardinals had added a fifth run in the top of the eighth inning before the game was called because of rain. But because Northern Illinois did not have a chance to bat in the bottom of the inning, NCAA rules dictate the score must revert back to that of the last fully completed inning.
According to the NCAA Rule Book Section 8.b., "It shall be a regulation game if called by the umpire at any time after five innings have been completed, and the score shall be that of the last equal inning played."
The Cardinals lose a run Kyle Dygert had scored in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrific fly by Mike Ayala. Click here for an updated box score from the game.
The victory Sunday came in a game that began Saturday and was suspended because of darkness after five innings. The Cardinals led 3-0 when the game was suspended and added a run on a Mike Ayala sacrifice fly in the sixth inning after the game resumed Sunday.
The win was the 10th in a row for Ball State and gave the Cardinals the top spot in the MAC West with a record of 31-18 (15-7 MAC). Ball State begins the final week of the regular season at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Indiana before heading to Central Michigan Thursday for the first game of a three-game series.
