Patrick Wilkes-Krier Wins Medalist Honors With Final-Round 65; Ball State Wins Team Title At Firestone
April 29, 2006 | Men's Golf
Wilkes-Krier's rounds of 69-67-65=201 was also a Ball State school record for low 54 holes, surpassing the 206 mark set by Jamie Broce at the Cobra Collegiate in 1999.
With a 284 team score in round one and 285 in rounds two and three, the Cardinals were the only team to finish under par at the event. The three-round score of 854 missed the all-time tournament record by just six strokes.
Ball State placed first at the 14-team tournament, featuring seven teams from the Mid-American Conference played at the famed Firestone Golf Club near Akron, Ohio.
Eastern Kentucky finished second (867), while Kent State was third (872).
"I am really proud of these guys," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "We played great team golf over the three rounds this weekend and hopefully we can build on this momentum next week at the MAC Championship.
"Patrick's performance was dominating and I couldn't be more proud of his accomplishment. Our team's effort was the most complete of the season and it couldn't come at a better point in the season."
Junior C.D. Hockersmith posted a sub-par round also Sunday with his 71. Hockersmith's three-round 70-73-71=214 total tied for sixth overall. Senior Brandon Boomsma (72-74-74) tied for 16th, while Austin Steele finished 22nd after rounds of 73-71-80.
Wayne Denger, who finished second at Firestone as a freshman and tied for first last season, tied for 33rd overall with a 76-76-75 total. Ball State's team title comes after a runner-up finish at the 2005 event.
