Women's Tennis Stuns Bowling Green; Picks Up First MAC Win
March 31, 2006 | Women's Tennis
BSU's No. 1 doubles tandem of Jessica Thompson and Haly Calderwood posted an 8-4 victory over BGSU's Jenna Nussbaum and Heidi Romer to give the Cardinals one of the two doubles matches it needed for the initial point. Katie Owens and Stephanie Farrar sealed the deal after taking down Bowling Green's sister duo of Ashley and Kelsey Jakupcin 8-6 at the No. 2 spot.
After a quick 6-2, 6-2 win by Owens at the No. 4 singles position, the eventual outcome looked to be in favor of the Cardinals. However, Bowling Green rallied back and took the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches fairly quickly.
The match came down to the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches. At the No. 2 position, Ball State's Jennifer Pollack pulled through after taking the first set tiebreak and easily captured the second set 6-2 to even the match at 3-3. The pressure was on at the No. 1 singles slot where BSU's Thompson and BGSU's Ashley Jakupcin went head-to-head. After Jakupcin took the first set 6-4, Thompson posted a valiant come-from-behind effort to secure the win, taking the second and third set with identical scores of 6-4.
The Cardinals take a 7-8 overall and 1-2 MAC record into tomorrow's match versus No. 68 Western Michigan. The contest is set for 1 p.m. at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
