The Zips registered the first run of the game in the bottom of the first as Scott Gunn hit a sac fly to right field, driving in Brian Kimutis, who reached on a walk.
Ball State took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth as senior center fielder Mike Sullivan (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) hit a sac fly to center field to drive in junior shortstop Eric Earnhart (Urbana, Ohio/Urbana), and senior second baseman Kyle Dygert (Angola, Ind./Angola) singled to right field driving in senior catcher Matt Singleton (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead).
Akron regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with back-to-back doubles down the left-field line by Charlie Lenhard and Marcus Geiselman, following an inning-opening walk of Doug McNulty.
Redshirt-sophomore Ben Snyder (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) made his sixth start of the year going 6.0 innings, giving up one hit and two earned runs, while walking five and striking out four batters for no decision.
Akron's Ross Liersemann (4-2) pitched a complete game two-hitter with two earned runs, three walks and a career-high 13 strikeouts.
Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Kyle Heyne (Coldwater, Ohio/Coldwater) entered the game in the seventh inning, giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out two in the loss, dropping his record to 1-4 on the season.
Despite the loss, BSU still leads the all-time series with Akron 18-14, including winning three of four last year.
The Cardinals continue their series with the Zips tomorrow and Sunday, with both games slated for 1 p.m. starts.
