National Academic Field Hockey Squads Announced

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) has announced that the Ball State University field hockey team has been honored as a 2005 Division I Academic Team award winner. BSU is one of 55 teams in the nation with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. In addition, nine individual Cardinals were identified as members of the National Academic Squad, including seniors Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) and Lacey Morgan (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster), junior Tara Reed (Temple, Pa./Oley Valley), sophomores Lauren Cruz (Centreville, Va./Centreville), Nicole Humphreys (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), Katie Kloeckener (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) and Amanda Pavone (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) plus freshman Melanie Pasillas (Glendora, Calif./Glendora).
Bannister, a goalkeeper, finished the season with a 2.79 GAA and a career-high 94 saves. She recorded all four wins in net for BSU -- including two shutouts -- during her 16 games played. Bannister registered a 1-0 overtime shutout of Miami Oct. 7, plus was in the cage for a 6-0 blanking of eventual Mid-American Conference Tournament champion Central Michigan Oct. 22. A double major in social work and sociology, Bannister finished the fall 2005 semester with a 3.526 cumulative grade-point average and was named to the 15-member Academic All-MAC team.
A forward, Cruz competed in all 18 games with 17 starts and posted three assists to earn All-MAC Second Team laurels. Her assists came on BSU's lone goal Oct. 7 in a 1-0 win over Miami, Oct. 22 in a 6-0 victory over Central Michigan and Oct. 30 in a 3-2 win over Missouri State. Cruz has a 3.528 overall GPA as a nursing major.
A defender, Humphreys started all 18 games to help lead the Cardinals' defense to two shutouts on the season, plus she notched a defensive save Aug. 28 at Virginia. Humphreys, an elementary education major, has a 3.600 GPA.
Kahn, a midfielder, saw action in 14 games with six starts in 2005. She managed one shot versus Central Michigan Oct. 22 and one shot at Miami Oct. 23. A business major, Kahn has a 3.319 GPA.
A forward, Kloeckener made her first career start August 27 versus William & Mary and went on to start 11 more, totaling four points while playing in all of BSU's 18 games. Her first career goal came Oct. 22 in a 6-0 shutout of CMU. Kloeckener added assists in back-to-back games against Northwestern and Louisville Sept. 16 & 17, respectively, to round out her scoring for the year. She has a 3.930 GPA in exercise science and was named to the 15-member Academic All-MAC team.
Morgan, a midfielder, started four of her seven games played. She registered three shots on the season and notched her first career goal on Nov. 3, eight minutes into the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament versus Miami. A political science and communication studies major, Morgan graduated in December with a 3.690 GPA.
Pasillas, a midfielder, played in four games with her lone start coming Sept. 23 versus Ohio. She registered a shot Sept. 20 against Ohio State. A communication studies major, Pasillas had a 3.933 GPA in her initial semester.
A defender, Pavone started all 18 of Ball State's games and recorded her first career goal Oct. 1 at Central Michigan. She also posted 10 shots on the year, including a season-high three Oct. 7 against Miami. A nursing major, Pavone has a 3.518 GPA.
Reed, a midfielder, started all 18 games and ranked third on the team in scoring with eight points. She scored Sept. 16 at Northwestern, Oct. 15 at Kent State and Oct. 30 at Missouri State for the game-winner, plus added assists Aug. 28 at Virginia and Oct. 22 against Central Michigan. An elementary education major, Reed has a 3.311 GPA.
