March 14, 2006 | Men's Golf
PINEHURST, N.C. -- The final round of the 2006 Pinehurst Invitational was cancelled due to wet and unplayable conditions. The 36-hole results become official with Ball State tied for seventh in the 17-team field.
"I am disappointed that we didn't get a chance to play," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "I thought the conditions were favorable for us. I am satisfied with getting a good round put together on Monday and posting a respectable finish in a tough field and on a tough course. We will learn from this experience to become an even better team."
Ball State posted a second-round score of 299 -- one of just five sub-300 team scores on day two -- to climb into a tie for seventh overall.
C.D. Hockersmith, who entered Monday's round tied for 21st, finished tied for 13th with a second-round of 74. Patrick Wilkes-Krier carded BSU's low round on Monday with a 73 to move from 45th into a tie for 21st.
The Cardinals tied for seventh place overall in the competitive 17-team field with a score of 604. Southern Methodist won the event (592), followed by UAB (596) and Indiana (597).
After a weekend with full sunshine and temperatures in the mid-60s, playing conditions worsened on Monday afternoon as BSU played its final nine holes in a rain and sleet mix.
The event was played at The Centennial Pinehurst Course No. 8. The course was set up as a par 72 with a yardage of 7,035.
This golf resort has witnessed countless extraordinary moments in golf history including Ben Hogan's first professional win, Jack Nicklaus and son both winning the Men's North and South Amateur, and Payne Stewart's dramatic 18th hole putt that led to victory in the 1999 U.S. Open. Bobby Jones so revered Pinehurst that he forever connected it to golf's homeland, dubbing it the "St. Andrews of United States Golf."
"We've got an opportunity to play some very good golf courses," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "The experience that they're going to get out of playing in these events and courses is going to be second to none."
Pinehurst continually strives to create the most unique, exciting and challenging golf experience for those lucky enough to play there. And with eight world-class golf courses and Pinehurst's very own Golf Advantage School, this historic resort offers an unparalleled golf experience.
