November 08, 2006 | Field Hockey
Ball State field hockey player Katie Kloeckener has been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team for the second straight year, as announced Wednesday by the league office.
An exercise science major, Kloeckener ranks second on the Ball State team with a 3.93 grade-point average and is one of eight Cardinal field hockey players who own a GPA higher than 3.0.
On the field, the junior forward scored four goals and added an assist for the Cardinals in 2006. Early in the season, Kloeckener scored in back-to-back games with goals against Northwestern (Aug. 27) and Indiana (Sept. 2). She later scored the opening goal Oct. 13 in Ball State's 3-2 victory over Ohio, helping the Cardinals snap a 14-game losing streak to the Bobcats.
Kloeckener's final goal of the season came Friday when she scored the opener in Ball State's 3-0 victory over Miami in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament.
The Cardinals earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament and advanced to the championship game before falling in overtime to No. 1 seed and host Ohio. Ball State finished the season 6-4 in MAC play (8-12 overall) to earn its first winning conference record since 1999. The team closed the season with wins in seven of its last 10 games.
In addtion to her Academic All-MAC recognition a year ago, Kloeckener was also named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Team in both 2004 and 2005. She becomes the first Ball State field hockey player to earn Academic All-MAC honors in consecutive seasons since Jenn Budney, Susan McDowell, Monika Rhode and Heather Weinhold accomplished the feat in 2001 and 2002.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-MAC honors, student-athletes must maintain a GPA of 3.2 or higher and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's contests. First-year players and junior college transfers in their first season are not eligible.
