Anthony Novak (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) and Eric Steger (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville H.S.) have each signed National Letters of Intent to attend Ball State University and compete for the men's golf program, according to head coach Mike Fleck.
"From our perspective, we signed the two best players in the state of Indiana," Fleck says. "Anthony and Eric have accomplished resumes and a tremendous amount of competitive experience. We are excited that they have joined our Ball State golf family. With the graduation of five seniors this spring, Anthony and Eric could have an immediate impact on our team next year."
Novak was the 2006 Indiana State Champion as a junior at Michigan City. He fired rounds of 66 and 72, which was the lowest first round and second-lowest 36-hole total in tournament history. A two-time team Most Valuable Player and all-conference selection, Novak was named the conference MVP as a junior.
Novak has played in 10 national events, recording a second-place finish at the Callaway Junior PGA Series at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He has won four high school invitationals en route to being named to the Indiana All-State team as a junior.
The son of Steve and Linda Novak, Anthony is a two-time Indianapolis City Tournament winner. He posted rounds of 68-67-73-66 to win by four shots in 2006. In 2005, he won by five strokes with rounds of 69-66-67-72. Novak owns a 3.95 grade-point average.
Steger is a two-time United States Golf Association Junior Amateur qualifier playing the 2005 event in Longmeadow, Mass. and the 2006 event at Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. He qualified for match play in 2005 with scores of 72-74.
The son of Scott and Donna Steger -- both Ball State Alums -- Eric won the 2006 Indianapolis Amateur with a nine-under par, 67-68 score. He tied for 21st at the 2006 Indiana State Open with rounds of 70-73-70-73.
Scott played golf at Ball State for former coach Earl Yestingsmeier from 1975 to 1978. He was inducted to the BSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988 and earned All-America honors in golf in 1977 and 1978.
