Oct. 30 - Caroline Lehman Named MAC Defensive Player Of The Week
October 30, 2006 | Field Hockey
For the second week in a row, Ball State freshman goalkeeper Caroline Lehman has been named the Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.
Sunday, in Ball State's regular season finale, Lehman shut out Missouri State in a 2-0 Cardinals' victory. She made three saves in the first half and stopped six more shots in the second half to help Ball State secure a win in its only game of the week.
With the victory, Ball State finished the regular season in a tie for second place in the conference with Miami and Central Michigan. The Cardinals earned the No. 2 seed in this week's MAC Tournament at Ohio and will play Friday at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of Thursday's match-up between third-seeded Miami and sixth-seeded Missouri State.
Lehman has not allowed a goal over the last 158 minutes of regulation time. A week before Sunday's shutout against Missouri State, Lehman held Miami scoreless in regulation before the RedHawks found the cage in overtime.
The last non-overtime goal Lehman allowed came in the 52nd minute Oct. 20 at Central Michigan. The freshman goalkeeper has saved 24 of the past 25 shots she has faced.
Lehman is tied for second in the MAC with two shutouts. Her first came Sept. 9 in a 2-0 victory over Saint Louis. She ranks third in the conference in saves with 116.
Lehman also won the Defensive Player of the Week award last week after matching her career-high with 12 saves Oct. 17 against Miami and then setting a new career-best with 15 saves Oct. 22 versus the RedHawks.
A Ball State player has been honored as Player of the Week four times this season. In addition to Lehman's two awards, senior forward Lindsay Quay has won the league's Offensive Player of the Week award twice.
