Field Hockey's Winning Streak Snapped With 4-3 Loss At Central Michigan
October 20, 2006 | Field Hockey
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Amanda Pavone scored two goals in Friday's contest at Central Michigan, but the Ball State field hockey team could not completely overcome a three-goal deficit.
The Cardinals fell 4-3 to the Chippewas, snapping their five-game winning streak.
"We didn't play like we should have," Ball State coach Annette Payne said, "but it was good for our team to come back and get those three goals."
Pavone's first goal came in the 51st minute, but by that time Central Michigan had already found the cage three times.
Samantha Sandham scored the Chippewas' first two goals of the day, and Alicia Balanesi added a goal in the final minute of the first half to give Central Michigan a 3-0 lead at the break.
After Pavone's goal brought the Cardinals to within two, Balanesi quickly answered with another goal for Central Michigan to push the Chippewas' lead back to three goals at 4-1.
Pavone netted her second goal at the 59:13 mark, tipping in a shot from Cardinal midfielder Jamie Kahn.
Pavone's two-goal performance was the first of her collegiate career. The junior now has a career-high three goals on the season.
Lindsay Quay scored the final goal of the game when Ball State executed on a penalty corner in the 62nd minute to cut Central Michigan's lead to one goal. But that was the last goal the Cardinals could manage.
With that final goal, Quay now has 12 on the season and 35 for her career. She has moved into a tie for seventh place on Ball State's all-time goals scored list.
After playing two games this week on the road, the Cardinals return to Muncie for their final home game of the season Sunday. Ball State will host Miami at 1 p.m. in a rematch Tuesday's game, which the Cardinals won 3-1.
