Quay's Hat Trick Lifts Field Hockey To Fourth Straight Win
October 14, 2006 | Field Hockey
Lindsay Quay scored three goals and provided an assist as the Ball State field hockey team built a four-goal lead and held on for a 4-2 victory Saturday against Kent State.
The Cardinals have now won four consecutive games for the first time since 1999 to improve their record to 5-9 (4-2 MAC). Saturday's win along with Ohio's victory over Miami places the Cardinals a half game out of first place in the Mid-American Conference.
Like they did Friday against Ohio, the Cardinals got off to a fast start against Kent State.
Quay scored her first goal in the sixth minute of play to give the Cardinals the early lead. The play began when junior forward Lauren Cruz intercepted a Kent State pass and fired the ball ahead to a streaking Katie Kloeckener. Kloeckener made her way inside the circle and fired a shot that was saved. Quay was there for the rebound, and she put the ball in the cage.
Eight minutes later, Quay picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and scored to push Ball State's lead to 2-0. Then, at the 22:49 mark, Quay scored again, taking a direct pass from Carla Chiampi on a penalty corner and firing a shot that just snuck inside the left post.
The hat trick was the second of Quay's career. Her three goals move her into a tie with June Lenher (1981-85) for tenth on Ball State's all-time goals list with 33. Quay is two goals away from moving into a four-way tie for seventh on the all-time list.
In addition to her three goals, Quay also assisted on the Cardinals' final goal of the day. One minute after her last goal, Quay found Amanda Pavone on a breakaway. When Kent State goalkeeper Kara Copeland came out to defend the pass, Pavone placed the ball into an open net to extend Ball State's lead to 4-0. The goal was the first of the year for Pavone.
For the game, Kent State attempted 17 shots to nine for Ball State and earned eight penalty corners to the Cardinals' four. But the Cardinals' defense allowed just seven shots on goal, and goalkeeper Caroline Lehman saved five shots to preserve the Cardinal lead.
Kent State added late goals in the final 10 minutes by Charlotte Muller and Kate Perry.
After four straight games at home, Ball State will hit the road next week. The Cardinals will travel to Oxford, Ohio, on Tuesday to take to Miami at 5 p.m. A victory would move Ball State into a tie for first place in the conference with Ohio, a team Ball State defeated Friday.
