September 23, 2005 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State field hockey team (1-7 overall, 0-1 Mid-American Conference) fell 5-1 to Ohio (2-5, 1-0 MAC) in the conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field.
On a pass from Erica Bundalo, the Bobcats' Nikki Gnozzio opened the scoring less than six minutes into the game with a short shot left of BSU junior goalkeeper Jessica Malone (Tabernacle, N.J./Shawnee), who made her second start of the season in the loss. Malone, whose record dropped to 0-2 on the year, managed eight saves.
After intercepting a Ball State pass out of the corner, Ohio forward Torrie Albini sent an unassisted slapper into the back of the net at 24:08 to give the Bobcats a 2-0 advantage heading into the half. At the 37:55 mark, Estienne Coetzee tipped in a pass from her sister, Rachelle, following the team's corner setup early in the second half.
Albini added her second goal of the game at 45:32 on a penalty shot, followed by an unassisted Taylor Edwards score 70 seconds later coming off of a rebound. Ball State got on the board at the 50:33 mark with a goal by junior Lindsay Quay (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) on a direct corner conversion. Senior Maggie Durbin (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) and junior Carla Chiampi (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) assisted on Quay's third goal of the season.
The Cardinals had a golden opportnity to add a second goal with a penalty shot at 57:14, but senior Chantelle Isaac-Smith's (Clayton, Calif./Concord) shot was stopped by Ohio goalkeeper Jennifer Cote.
Ohio finished with a 17-15 shot advantage over Ball State, but the Cardinals outshot the Bobcats 13-6 in the second half. OU also had a 9-8 edge in penalty corners.
