Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season to Illinois State
September 02, 2005 | Soccer
Illinois State's Melissa Routledge logged her third goal of the season at the 30:39 mark off an assist by Bethany Russ. The winner proved to be the lone goal of the match as Ball State could not convert on their attempt to rally back in the second half. The Cardinals posted 10 shots in the second stanza alone, compared to Illinois State's four.
"I thought we generated some good scoring chances," said Ball State head coach Ron Rainey. "They took the game to us in the first 45 minutes. However, I thought we did a better job in the second half. Illinois State is a good team. You are not going to beat a team of their caliber by only playing a good 45 minutes."
Junior Amy Holst returned to the starting lineup and saw action in her first game of the season. She tallied a game-high four shots, including three in less than one minute, only to see all of them blocked by an ISU defender.
Sophomore Sarah Leibel added three more shots, along with freshman Katelyn Alexander. Junior Vandi Ogden chipped in with two more for the Cardinals.
In goal, junior Alison Becker recorded four saves for BSU, while Illinois State's Andrea Shaw and Erica Goethel split time in the position.
The Ball State soccer team returns to action Sunday when it hosts Youngstown State in another non-conference matchup. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Ball State Soccer Field. Admission is free.
