September 18, 2005 | Soccer
"I thought the game going back and forth was fairly equal," said Ball State head coach Ron Rainey. "Once we got into the box, our players did a good job of getting themselves into finishing positions. There were a lot of hussle goals for us today, which is great to see as a coach."
Nine minutes into the match, senior Lindsay Wiltshire and junior Amy Holst found sophomore Sarah Leibel, who broke away from several Loyola defenders to score her third goal of 2005.
Less than five minutes later, at the 13:41 mark, sophomore Lindsay Martin helped the Cardinals increase their lead when she bounced the ball over the head of Loyola's goalkeeper, Emily Pieck. It was Martin's first goal of the season.
Loyola secured its first and eventual lone goal of the game when Amy Lomas found the back of the net at the 25:30 mark.
After halftime, three more Cardinals had success with their shots. Holst was handed a pass by sophomore Angie Heyer 76:08 into the game, while sophomore Laura Bandy tallied her second winner of the season off an assist by Martin at the 81:11 mark. The final goal of the game came when freshman Katelyn Alexander snuck one in past Loyola's Lauren Sommer off a pass from fellow freshman Sarah Schumacker at 86:28.
Ball State took a slim 17-15 advantage in shots, while Loyola held a seven to three advantage in corner kicks.
Cardinal goalkeeper Alison Becker registered six saves in 90 minutes of play. Freshman Emily Rein tabbed a game-high five shots for the host Cardinals.
