Field Hockey Falls to Northwestern in OT
September 16, 2005 | Field Hockey
Senior Chantelle Isaac-Smith (Clayton, Calif./Concord) got the scoring started at the six-minute mark as she put away her fourth goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Katie Kloeckener (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx), who drew the goalkeeper to the right side of the net and then dished it off. The assist marks Kloeckener's first career point in her eighth career game for BSU.
The Wildcats' Ellen Schlafly responded with two goals before the end of the first half. Schlafly's first came on an assist from Megan Sieberg at 23:12, while her second was unassisted at 26:32.
Less than six minutes into the second frame, Northwestern's Meghan Small put in her third goal of the season, giving NU a 3-1 advantage. Ball State junior Tara Reed (Temple, Pa./Oley Valley) started a Cardinals comeback at 52:20 with her first goal of the year by tipping in a shot from junior Lindsay Quay (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), who registered the assist.
Three minutes later, Isaac-Smith dribbled into the offensive zone, spun around two defenders and fired a shot past the Wildcats' goalkeeper to tie the game at three and eventually carry the game into OT.
The Cardinals' first extra session of 2005 was a quick one, as the Wildcats pounced just 2:34 into overtime with an unassisted goal from Holly Palin past the right arm of Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) to give NU the win.
Bannister, who managed two key saves after the Cardinals had tied the game late in the second half, stopped five shots on the afternoon.
The teams finished tied in total shots at 15 apiece, but Northwestern held a slight advantage in penalty corners with a 7-6 edge.
Ball State continues play in Evanston, Ill., Saturday with another noon contest, this time against former Mid-American Conference rival Louisville. Now a member of the Big East Conference, Louisville enters the game with a 5-2 overall record after falling in overtime to 17th-ranked Ohio State Wednesday.
