Rein Scores Two More in Soccer's 3-2 Victory Over Butler
August 28, 2005 | Soccer
After scoring the first and final goal of the match, Emily Rein has now notched four goals in two matches to start her freshman campaign. The first winner came at the 3:12 mark after she stole the ball from Butler's goalkeeper, Megan Cappa.
Butler soon rallied back with a goal from Marianne Schilling at 11:01 off an assist by Angie Muir. Muir then passed the ball to Jenny Southard five minutes later (16:55) and the duo helped Butler take the 2-1 lead.
Ball State freshman Leah Johnson tied the match at 2-2 when she contributed her first goal of the season off an assist by sophomore Laura Bandy at the 41:15 mark.
Rein then shot in the game winner with 17:35 remaining in the match off an assist by fellow freshman Sarah Schumacker.
"It is always neat to see a team make some great adjustments when it is down," said Ball State head coach Ron Rainey. "Our depth was a huge factor in the win today. If everyone goes on the field and makes a positive impact like they did this afternoon, it will give us the opportunity to play 17 or 18 players a game."
The Cardinals posted 14 shots to the Bulldogs' seven and three corner kicks to two, respectively. BSU goalkeeper Alison Becker registered four saves in all 90 minutes in goal.
Ball State improves to 2-0 on the season, while Butler falls to 0-2. BSU looks for its next challenge Friday when it hosts Illinois State at 4 p.m.
