C.D. Hockersmith Falls To Michelle Wie At USGA Public Links Championship
July 10, 2005 | Men's Golf
Wie, who converted birdies on the first two holes, also defeated Jim Renner 3-and-1 in her second match Thursday afternoon. With the two wins, Wie advanced to the final eight of the tournament.
"I was just a little off at the start," Hockersmith said following the round. "It was hard to keep my emotions in check with the crowd and everything going on. I was nervous, but I also felt like I was doing a good job of staying focused. She hit some great shots. I wish I could have played a little better and given her a better match."
Wie won the first hole with a birdie, hitting a 3-foot putt, and never trailed against Hockersmith. She birdied three of the first four holes and then parred the par-3 fifth to lead by five.
Hockersmith drilled his approach to five feet at the par-3 eighth en route to a birdie to win the hole. He also won the 10th hole with a par, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
"I think I settled down after the fourth hole," Hockersmith said. "I was worried after my second shot on number four. It's tough to get down early and come back. I knew something had to change."
Hockersmith, who had his father David serve as his caddy throughout USGA event, said the familiar faces of family and friends in the gallery did not go unnoticed.
"It was real helpful to have the support of my family and friends," Hockersmith said. "I can't tell you how glad I was to have them here. The whole experience is something I will never forget. I learned from the experience, not just from today, but from the whole tournament. I know it will make me a better golfer the next time I tee it up."
