The Justin Cross 'Audience of 1' Bracelets
Justin Cross was a member of the Ball State men's golf team who lost his four-year battle with cancer in 2005. His courage, attitude and faith touched everyone who knew him.
In his memory, the Ball State men's golf program has established a memorial scholarship in his name. Justin always marked his golf ball with an 'A-1' and 100% of the proceeds from the bracelets will go to the scholarship fund.
"This is a visual way of having Justin with our team and our program," said BSU head coach Mike Fleck. "The impact he had at Ball State, not just with the golf program, but with everyone who knew him, is evident every day.
"The first thing that I think of is the impression that he made on people," Fleck added. "His time with us will be unforgettable. He was always upbeat, very positive and very faith-driven."
Prior to playing at Ball State, Cross helped Richmond High School win the boys golf state title in 1997. He graduated in 1999 and played for Ball State before being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in June 2000.
Chemotherapy kept Cross out of college for a year, but the treatments sent his cancer into remission.
Cross returned to the Ball State golf team in 2001 and regained much of his strength during the 2002-03 season. Cancer reappeared in early May 2003 after the Mid-American Conference Championships.
He underwent a bone marrow transplant in August 2003. He relapsed in July 2004, about three weeks before the one-year anniversary of the transplant. Cross was five classes away from a bachelor's degree.
