Senior midfielder Lacey Morgan (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) opened the scoring with her first career goal in just her fourth career start at the 7:51 mark, assisted on a breakaway by senior forward Chantelle Isaac (Clayton, Calif./Concord).
Miami struck back 32:23 into the half to even the score, with a goal by freshman forward Courtney Fretz from senior midfielder Jessica Saling.
The teams were even in shots and penalty corners, with threes all around after the first 35 minutes. Ball State senior goalkeeper Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) stopped two shots in the opening frame as did Miami senior goalkeeper Kerri Orr.
With less than 11 minutes remaining in the second half, a pair of RedHawk defenders connected on a scoring play as freshman Teja Kammler added a goal with the assist from sophomore Meredith Corradino.
Junior forward Lindsay Quay (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) gathered her own rebound for the Cardinals with just eight seconds remaining and sent it into the back of the cage to knot the score at 2-2 and send it into overtime with her 10th goal of the year.
Following the second half, Ball State owned a 9-6 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in corners.
Miami outshot BSU 6-1 in the initial overtime and had three corners to Ball State's one, but failed to convert in the 15-minute frame. In the second extra period, the Cardinals outshot the RedHawks 4-3, but Miami had four corners to zero for Ball State.
In the first round of penalty shots, Quay and sophomore defender Amanda Pavone (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) made their shots past Orr. Miami also notched two goals to send the game into a second round of shootout.
In the second round, all five of Ball State's shots were stopped by Orr, while Miami's score came on their third attempt for a team goal to win the game 3-2.
The Cardinals split the regular-season series with the RedHawks, with each team notching a 1-0 decision at their home field. In the first meeting Oct. 7 in Muncie, Ball State earned the victory in overtime as Chantelle Isaac scored on a breakaway in the 78th minute with a crossing pass from Lauren Cruz. Goalkeeper Tracy Bannister earned her first shutout of the season, making one save. During their second meeting Oct. 23 in Oxford, Ohio, Miami's Danielle Pericone scored in the 26th minute for the eventual game-winner.
