Ross Cosat (Carthage, Ind./Knightstown H.S.) and Travis Smith (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South H.S.) have each signed a national letter of intent to attend Ball State University and compete for the men's golf program, according to head coach Mike Fleck.
"We realize how important the state of Indiana is to our recruiting," Fleck said. "To attract the quality of student-athletes that Ross and Travis are to Ball State, especially with the top schools in the state and Midwest also interested, is very exciting. When you look at these two and their combined national and junior golf experience, it would be easy to call this one of the best recruiting classes ever at Ball State."
Cosat is the No. 1 ranked senior in Indiana according to the National Junior Golf Scoreboard. Playing for former Ball State letterwinner Max Minnick at Knightstown, Cosat has qualified for the Indiana state tournament as a sophomore and junior. He was an all-state selection as a junior and qualified for the United States Golf Association's National Junior Amateur last summer with rounds of 72-71 at Coyote Crossing in Lafayette, Ind.
"Ross is a high-quality player who really emerged on the national golf scene last summer," Flecks says. "He has a lot of competitive golf experience and we expect major contributions over the course of his career at Ball State."
Smith recently earned a prestigious national honor when he was named a American Junior Golf Association Honorable Mention Junior All-American in October. The honor puts him among the top of current and former top-level junior golfers from around the world. He currently is ranked as the 31st best senior in the nation by the AJGA.
Smith won the AJGA Bluegrass Junior Invitational with rounds of 65, 69 and 72, plus was his conference medalist as a junior with a 71 at The Legends of Indiana in Franklin. He has qualified for the state tournament in each of his three high school seasons.
"The national record that Travis has assembled speaks for itself," Fleck says. "He will definitely be a major contributor for the next four years in our program. We feel very fortunate to have Travis and Ross join our golf family."
