Women's Soccer Suffers Season-Ending Loss to Kent State in MAC Quarterfinals
November 01, 2005 | Soccer
After two scoreless halves and two scoreless overtime periods, the match went into a penalty kick situation. The visiting Golden Flashes converted on three PKs, while the host Cardinals converted on one.
Kent State's Cassie Seten went up to the box first and posted KSU's first winner. After an unsuccessful BSU and then an unsuccessful KSU second try, BSU's Sarah Leibel converted and tied the score at 1-1 after two tries by each team. The Golden Flashes' Ashley Bohinc came up next and recorded another KSU winner. After another Cardinal miss, Kent State's Caitlin Hester blasted the ball in the net past BSU's goalkeeper, Alison Becker. Ball State had another chance to tally a winner and, unfortunately, came up short.
Overall, Ball State held a 17-16 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon. Both Becker and Kent State's goalkeeper, Alicia Fernandez, registered nine saves in 110 minutes in goal.
"I thought we had some good chances today," said Ball State head coach Ron Rainey. "Kent State did a good job of defending us. Offensively, they did a nice job of getting the ball out wide. Both keepers made some excellent saves today."
"Penalty kicks is a hard way to end the season," Rainey continues. "It is a hollow way to end this campaign. We would have liked to possess a little better, but Alison played great today. She kept the game a shutout for us. Overall, we had an awesome year. Three losses in a 20 game season is hard to complain about. We have only lost six games out of 40 in two seasons."
Ball State concludes the 2005 campaign with a 15-3-2 overall record. The squad finished second in the league, which ties for the best finish in program history.
