October 08, 2005 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State field hockey team (2-9, 1-3 MAC) dropped a 2-1 decision to new Mid-American Conference member Missouri State (2-10, 2-3 MAC) Saturday afternoon at the BSU Turf Field, following a ceremony celebrating BSU's four senior student-athletes.
After junior Lindsay Quay (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) was forced to sit out with a yellow card nine minutes into the first half, Missouri State's JoAnn Westman used the one-player advantage to add her second goal of the season on a pass from Ashley Huck at the 11:37 mark and put the Bears up 1-0.
The Cardinals continued their strong offensive effort from Friday's win over Miami by attempting 13 shots in the first half, but only five of those made it to the goalkeeper.
Senior Chantelle Isaac (Clayton, Calif./Concord) scored a goal in her second-consecutive game after freshman Casey Hunsicker (Myerstown, Pa./Tulpehocken) fed her a pass through a group of defenders at 36:54. The goal was Isaac's eighth of the season and 22nd career ledger, while the assist was Hunsicker's first career point.
The Bears' Westman scored the eventual game-winner at 58:07 on a pass from Liz Miyashita.
Ball State outshot MSU 31-12 and held an 18-6 advantage in penalty corners for the game.
Missouri State goalkeeper Kim Kinsella stopped 17 shots by the Cardinals to pick up the win. BSU senior goalkeeper Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) had four saves on the afternoon.
The Cardinals return to action Oct. 14 for a 3 p.m. showdown at Ohio and then travel to Kent State Oct. 15 for a 1 p.m. contest.
