Three Second-Half Goals Lift Field Hockey Over Missouri State
October 30, 2005 | Field Hockey
Missouri State's Katie Schwartz notched the first goal at 4:51 of the first half from the left side of the cage. At the 29:10 mark, the Bears' Melissa Millan led a fast break and fed Joann Westman a crossing pass to beat BSU goalkeeper Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) with a line drive shot to increase the lead to 2-0 late in the half.
Ball State had a 7-0 advantage in penalty corners during the first stanza and outshot Missouri State 8-5.
At 42:44 in the second half, BSU junior forward Lindsay Quay (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) got her ninth goal of the season on a penalty corner, set up by senior midfielder Maggie Durbin (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) and sophomore forward Lauren Cruz (Centreville, Va./Centreville) to cut MSU's lead in half at 2-1.
Ball State senior forward Chantelle Isaac (Clayton, Calif./Concord) had two square shots on goal at the 10-minute mark but was stopped by goalkeeper Kim Kinsella. Junior midfielder Carla Chiampi (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) added to the offensive pressure by tying the game nearly a minute later as she gathered a rebound and slammed it into the cage for her second score of the year.
Missouri State had a wide open chance with just over 2:15 remaining, as a player was planted all alone on the left side of the cage about two yards away from the goal line, but she whiffed the pass.
BSU took advantage of the missed opportunity and passed it down the field where junior midfielder Tara Reed (Temple, Pa./Oley Valley) notched her third goal of the season with one minute remaining to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead that it would not relinquish on a pass from Quay.
Bannister finished with six saves for the win, moving her record in goal to 4-11 on the season.
For the game, Ball State held a 14-3 edge in penalty corners and a 20-8 advantage in shots.
The Cardinals are now 7-3 all-time versus the Bears, who are in their first year in the Mid-American Conference. MSU defeated BSU 2-1 Oct. 8 in Muncie for their first-ever MAC matchup.
The sixth-seeded Cardinals will play the third-seeded Miami RedHawks at 2:30 p.m. in first round action of the MAC Tournament Thursday, Nov. 3 in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
