Soccer Scores 2-0 Shutout Despite Inclement Weather
October 21, 2005 | Soccer
The shutout is the eighth for Ball State in 2005 and improves its record to 13-3-1 overall and 6-2-1 in Mid-American Conference action. Northern Illinois falls to 5-9-2 overall and 3-6 in league play.
"It was a good effort today throughout all 90 minutes," said BSU head coach Ron Rainey. "Both teams have to constantly move their feet when the field is in this condition. Overall, the teams reacted well to the field."
Sophomore forward Sarah Leibel amassed her fifth goal of the season at the 12:18 mark to put BSU on the scoreboard initially. Freshman forward Emily Rein was credited with the assist.
Rein came back with a goal herself in the 74th minute to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. The goal was the seventh for Rein on the season. She received the pass from sophomore defender Betsy Wilcek.
The Cardinals took 10 corner kicks to the Huskies' five. Senior forward Lindsay Wiltshire posted a team-high three shots for the home team, while five Cardinals chipped in with two shots apiece.
"Northern Illinois did some nice things attacking wise in the second half," Rainey continues. "We would have liked to possess the ball a little better in that period. Right now we are looking forward to Sunday's game. If we can come out and play like we did today, we will put ourselves in a position to be successful."
Rainey and the squad hosts league-leading Western Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday. The senior members of the team will be honored pregame.
