Field Hockey Falls to Kent State in Overtime

KENT, Ohio -- In its third overtime battle of the season, the Ball State field hockey team (2-11, 1-5 MAC) dropped a 3-2 decision to Kent State (4-12, 4-2 MAC) Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals opened up an early 2-0 lead after goals by juniors Lindsay Quay (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and Tara Reed (Temple, Pa./Oley Valley). Quay notched her fifth score of the season at 5:22 on a pass from senior Chantelle Isaac (Clayton, Calif./Concord), who led the Mid-American Conference in points-per-game and goals entering the weekend. Reed added an unassisted tally for her second goal of the season at the 14:50 mark.
Kent State came back with a strike nearly 30 seconds later to cut the lead in half on a shot by Liz Fettrow, assisted by Elizabeth Lahey. Britt Van Pelt knotted the score at two apiece at the 63:48 mark with an unassisted goal to carry the game into overtime.
During the overtime session, Mel Bierens De Haan added an unassisted game-winning goal for the Golden Flashes.
Senior goalkeeper Tracy Bannister (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) stopped six KSU shots, including two in the overtime period.
Kent State outshot Ball State 18-16 and held a slight 6-5 edge in penalty corners for the game.
Ball State returns home Saturday, Oct. 22 for a 1 p.m. game against Central Michigan and then travels to Oxford, Ohio, for a 1 p.m. contest versus the Miami RedHawks Sunday, Oct. 23.
