MUNCIE, Ind. - - Nate Fields (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) and Jason Jamerson (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights H.S.) have signed national letters of intent to attend Ball State University and compete on the baseball team, according to BSU head coach Greg Beals. The pair join Jay Broughton (Fairland, Ind./Triton Central H.S.) and Alex Schmid (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic H.S.) to round out the early signing period for the Cardinals 2006 season.
Fields enters his senior season at Anderson H.S. as on of the top shortstops in the Fort Ancient Valley Conference. A three-year letterwinner for coach Shea Wardwell, he is also a three-time all-city and all-conference selection. Fields led the city of Cincinnati in stolen bases (35) and runs scored (47) last season, which were both single-season school records. In addition, he established the school standard for career stolen bases (66) and has posted 111 runs scored, 18 home runs, 75 RBI, 62 walks and 29 doubles over his three seasons.
Last season, Feilds helped guide Anderson to a conference championship, as well as a No. 3 ranking in the Cincinnati poll and a No. 10 ranking in the state poll. He posted a .427 (38-for-89) batting average and a .557 on base percentage, while collecting 19 singles, eight doubles, four triples and seven home runs. In addition to his high school playing experience, Fields plays summer ball for the Midland Organization.
"Nate is a great addition to our program," said Beals. "He has the potential to be a dynamic offensive player - - combining speed and power. He is a high school shortstop with the speed to play centerfield. His versatility will be a great asset to our program."
Jamerson enters his senior season at Pendleton Heights H.S. as one of the top two-sport athletes in school history. A two-year letterwinner in baseball for coach Bill Stout, he is the school’s football record-holder for season receptions, season yardage and career receptions. Pendleton Heights’ 2005 Wendy’s High School Heisman nominee, Jamerson is a two-time all-county, all-area, all-conference and all-state honorable in baseball. The team’s Most Valuable Player in 2004, he was also a Hoosier Diamond All-State first team choice, a Star North Team selection and an Indianapolis Star Super Team pick as a junior.
Last season, Jamerson posted a blistering .475 (38-for-80) batting average with 13 doubles and five home runs. He collected 25 RBI and 12 stolen bases, while scoring 37 runs. He tallied 11 walks compared to five strikeouts. In addition to his high school playing experience, Jamerson has played summer ball for the Indiana Bulls for the past five season.
"Jason is a baseball player," said Beals. "He knows how to play the game and does it well. He will be a great addition to our program. Jason is a great student and comes from a great family. He has played in one of the top high school programs in the state and the top summer program in the state. Those affiliations have taught him how to be a winner and we look forward to him bring that kind of success to the Cardinals."
